At GSE’s 5th Annual Principals’ Leadership Conference, recently appointed NYC Chancellor of Education Cathleen Black addressed almost 150 NYC school principals at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus. The event was hosted by GSE Dean James Hennessy, and organized by Dr. John Lee (Clinical Associate Professor, Division of Educational Leadership, Administration and Policy).
Among the concerns raised with the Chancellor by the principals present were:
-Expediting removal of unsatisfactory teachers
-Necessary supports in terms of special education/need students
-The need for more and quicker communication with and among principals so they aren’t the last to find out about developments in New York City Schools
-How students placed in different schools due to school closures affect the future performance of the schools they are placed in.
A panel discussion followed Chancellor Black’s comments, with Gerald Cattaro, Ph.D., GSE ELAP Division Chair; Lester Young, Ed.D., (GSE ’78) Regent-At-Large, The University of the State of New York; Barbara Kirkweg, Principal of Bronx Aerospace High School; Jacqueline Gonzalez, Network Leader NYC Department of Education and Kathleen Cashin, Ed.D., Clinical Associate Professor at GSE who was just appointed to the Brooklyn position on the New York State Board of Regents on March 8.
