Sue Luft, an elementary school teacher at Fox Meadow Elementary School in Scarsdale, NY, and a current Ph.D. student at GSE in Language Literacy and Learning, has been named a classroom innovator in the LoHud Journal News for her unique approach to teaching social studies to her first-graders.
Luft’s class held a read-a-thon that raised $500 for Charity: Water, a nonprofit group that helps fund wells and other clean-water solutions in places like Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Malawi. This past school year, her students donated $400 to the cause by getting sponsors for their weekly chores. Along with learning more about complex global issues, she tries to teach them that “as small as we are in this big giant world, you can reach out and help someone so far away.”
